Thankfully we awoke to a beautiful day with not a cloud in the sky so we had our breakfast and headed out to see the sites of Avignon. We walked down the main street to the square and the Palace of the Popes which was built in the 14th century. We decided to take the tourist trolley to see the main sites including the Saint Benezet's Bridge, Pont d`Avignon.
Avignon is a beautiful old walled city and the tourist trolley was a great idea seeming we only had limited time. We stopped for a coffee in the square before heading off to Pont du Gard.
The Pont du Gard was built by the Romans to supply Nimes with water. It was constructed they think in the mid first century.
We strolled around for a while as it was a lovely day then headed for Carcassonne. We arrived around 5ish and relaxed for a while taking in the wonderful views from our B&B. We headed into the Medieval Cite which looks like something out of a fairy tale for dinner. Carcassonne was settled as far back as the 6th century passing through the Romans and Visigoths before its golden age under the great Languedocian family.
Noel is in 7th heaven and the look on his face is like that of a child on Christmas morning. He can't wait to come back tomorrow and explore the cite. We decided to have the local dish Cassoulet for dinner which is a much loved local specialty dish since they have enjoyed since the 15th century. We found this very quaint restaurant tucked away down a lane which is full of treasures and has the most wonderful medieval atmosphere. The Cassoulet dish takes its name from vessel from which it is cooked. The clay pot from Issel 8km from Castelnaudary. The dish is made from white beans, pork, duck and local pork sausages. Other essential ingredients are garlic and pork belly. Lucky I don't have a gall balder anymore or I would have been in trouble after this meal. It is dark by the time we leave so we are able to see the cite all light up and it looks spectacular.
We are all really looking forward to going back in the morning to explore the cite some more (especially Noel).
I have put a few more photos on Facebook.
